Q: If you know that you want to be a copywriter, why not attend a portfolio school?
A: I would love to attend a portfolio school. To be surrounded by great creative directors and fellow students with the same goals and desires of succeeding in the ad biz would be very exciting to me. I would love the competition of concepting brilliant ads that would make my classmates jealous. Portfolio school would be so much fun.
But based on my current situation, portfolio school is not an option for me. As I'm sure it isn't with a lot of fellow creatives. Moving to a place like Atlanta (Creative Circus and Portfolio Center) and taking out massive loans to cover everything would place a heavy burden on me. Plus with family circumstances currently going on in my life, it would not be right for me to be so far away from home. A four hour drive from Dallas to Houston is far enough. At least for now.
I do love the work that I see coming out of portfolio schools and if I had the chance, I would attend The Creative Circus in Atlanta. I wish they had a place like that in Houston or Dallas.
Nonetheless, I'm taking the traditional route of landing a job as a copywriter. Devoting months of my time to craft a portfolio that will wow a creative director into landing my first job.
And I am enjoying every single minute of it.
